What is Mold?
Mold, or mould, is a structure found on certain types of fungi that contains spores. These spores can vary in colour, size, and shape. When disturbed, these dust-like particles get released into the air and can easily be inhaled. You may or may not even realize you have breathed in a substantial amount of mould spores, but it can damage your health. Black mold is especially harmful to your health, but all types carry some level of risk.
How is mold harmful?
Mold comprises tiny spores that can be breathed in, causing damage to the respiratory system. For those with asthma or COPD, the consequences can be more severe than merely exhibiting allergy-like symptoms. Excessive mold presence can trigger reactions, even though there is a low level of mold naturally present in our surroundings. Certain types of mold contain mycotoxins that could be particularly hazardous to some people. Symptoms of mold exposure include itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, skin irritation, and sore throat.
Mold – Where is it found?
Mould can be found anywhere in the home. Here are some common culprits where you may find a mold outbreak:
Attic
Often found on the plywood sheathing on both roof and sidewall.
Crawl space
Often found on the primary flooring and joists.
Exterior walls
Water penetration from the exterior or plumbing lines running through the wall.
Interior walls
Any interior wall near a water source can contain mould.
Hot water tank
Leaking hot water tanks and fittings can create large amounts of mould.
Sinks, toilets, tubs and showers
Leaking fittings, seals and plumbing lines running throughout the home
Plumbing lines
Most mould in the home can be attributed to leaking plumbing lines.

Professional Mold Removal Services
Our process for removing mold uses a similar approach as our other services involving a Notice of Project to WorkSafe BC, containment, and removal.
NOP (Notice of Project)
Mold Containment
Due to the nature of mold spores, enclosing the area is often necessary. This containment ensures the airborne spores do not breach the worksite, allowing workers to thoroughly remove the mold. Depending on where the mold abatement is occurring, some areas of the home may become inaccessible for the duration of the project. The containment may block hallways, doorways, and access to other rooms. Removing mold may mean that alternative accommodations need to be arranged ahead of time, especially if it is a large project or the home’s only bathroom is being worked on, for example.
